Microvascular study of hearts with endomyocardial fibrosis.

چکیده
The vascularity of ii hearts with endomyocardialfibrosis, which were part of a larger series of I47 heartsfrom patients dying at the Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, have been studied by injection, microradiographic, and histological techniques. A complete range of pathological types of endomyocardial fibrotic hearts were studied. Every heart showed some pericarditis and small scars scattered within the myocardium, while three hearts contained smallfoci of active myocarditis, but without eosinophil infiltration. No constant relation was seen between the distribution of endocardial and myocardial damage, but in general the more extensive the endocardial damage the more extensive the myocardial damage, particularly in the subendocardial zone. Endocardial thrombus became organized by numerous small vessels extending outfrom the subendocardial zone while the resulting fibrous tissue was relatively avascular. The valves were not primarily diseased but were secondarily involved by encroaching organizing thrombus. The findings show that a small vessel pathology is unlikely and that endomyocardial fibrosis should be considered a pancarditis. It is suggested that more attention should be directed at establishing whether a toxic or infective agent acting directly on the endocardium and myocardium is of importance and whether there is an abnormal individual response.

Histochemical and Immunohistochemical Analysis of Collagen Fibers and Microvascular Density in Various Grades of Oral Submucous Fibrosis
Background and Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate the collagen fibers qualitatively and its correlation with microvascular density in various grades of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF). Material and Methods: The present study comprised of total 40 cases of oral submucous fibrosis. Picrosirius red staining was done on all the specimens’ sections. ...
متن کاملCollagen content and distribution in the normal and transplanted human heart: A postmortem quantitative light microscopic analysis.
Endomyocardial biopsies in heart transplant patients offer the opportunity to study the myocardial interstitium in the context of myocardial function. For that purpose endomyocardial biopsies should reliably reflect the composition of the entire myocardium. We determined whether the collagen content in the subendocardial region of the right side of the interventricular septum (site of right ven...
متن کاملThe Function of the Heart in Endomyocardial Fibrosis of the Right Ventricle.
Endomyocardial fibrosis is a common heart disease among the indigenous peoples of many of the tropical African countries. The morbid anatomical findings have been described in detail by Davies and Ball (1955) so that only the fundamental features require comment here. The initial lesion seems to be in the endocardium at the apex of either or both ventricles. Thence the fibrotic process spreads ...
متن کاملFibrosis in the transplanted heart and its relation to donor ischemic time. Assessment with polarized light microscopy and digital image analysis.
Long-distance procurement of cardiac allografts is commonly used to increase the supply of donor organs but has recently been associated with the development of impaired diastolic function. Therefore, the effect of the total ischemic duration on myocardial fibrosis was quantitatively evaluated in 36 cardiac transplant recipients in whom the ischemic time ranged from 70 to 363 (mean, 189 +/- 83)...
متن کاملIdiopathic Hypereosinophilic Syndrome
Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome is a multisystem disease with peripheral blood eosinophilia of at least 6 months duration, multiple organ system involvement, and no evidence for other known causes of eosinophilia. It is characteristically a disease of middle-aged men, often has a poor prognosis and is seldom found during childhood. Heart dicsease, characterized by endomyocardial fibrosis ...
